About Us

ICAR-KVK Longleng is situated adjacent to NH- 702 located at Naga Hukphang junction, Hukphang Village is a highway that runs through Longleng district in Nagaland, India. It's a branch of National Highway 2 and is an important connector in eastern Nagaland. Longleng District, the Home of the Phom Nagas, is the tenth district of Nagaland, formed as a result of bifurcation of Tuensang District. It is bounded by Mon District in the East, Mokokchung District in the west, Shivsagar District (Assam) in the North and Tuensang District in the south. Longleng District is headquartered at Longleng Town (about 1,100m above sea level). Longleng and Tamlu are the major towns of the district. Most of the inhabitants belong to the Phom tribes. The district falls under southwest monsoon zone and is a strip of mountainous territory having no plains, located at an elevation of None meters (0 feet) above sea level, Longleng has a Humid subtropical, dry winter climate (Classification: Cwa). The district’s yearly temperature is 25.69ºC (78.24ºF) and it is -0.28% lower than India’s averages. Longleng typically receives about 320.71 millimeters (12.63 inches) of precipitation and has 234.92 rainy days (64.36% of the time) annually. The agro-climatic zone of Longleng district in Nagaland is classified as the region "Eastern Himalayan Region, sub-zone “North East Hills " and climate “Pre-humid to humid monsoon climate”. 

Thus infrastructure facility of the centre includes an Administration Building, an Experimental Farm, a livestock Farm (Poultry, Pig, Duck, Cattle), Jalkund - Rain water harvesting structure, mushroom unit, Vermicomposting unit and water storage tank. The research institute is functioning at Longleng since 10th December 2011 with the following objectives.

  • To evolve sustainable integrated faring system for hills to replace jhum cultivation.
  • Restoration of degrade/ jhum fallow lands through tree based farming.
  • To increase the overall productivity of different crops through research in cereals, pulses, oilseeds, horticultural, fisheries and other economical crops.
  • Animal health coverage and improvement of livestock production system.
  • To act as repository of agricultural information on net work for state regional international market.

 

Mandate of the Institute

 

  • Development of sustainable farming systems for different agro-climatic and socio-economic  zones of the region. Improvement in rain-fed agriculture through watershed based approach.
  • Improvement in the productivity of different crops, live stocks and aquatic fauna through the development / screening of varieties and agro-techniques.
  • Development of local competence through training on agriculture and allied sectors.
  • Development of effective linkages with other development departments, financing agencies and SAUs / CAUs operating in the region.
  • To maintain database and act as a repository of information centre on agriculture and allied sectors and to provide consultancy in the above areas including plant and animal bio-technology.
  • Germplasm exchange, research update in a collaborative mode with other national and international agencies.

  • Farming systems research and agro-forestry interventions through water shed based approach and development of efficient cropping systems.
  • Development and screening of suitable crop varieties and animal breeds.
  • Soil and nutrient management and soil and water conservation.
  • Development of technologies for organic food production.
  • Diseases and pest management.
  • Improvement of fruits, vegetables and spices including floriculture and hi-tech horticulture.
  • Farm mechanization.
  • Post harvest technology.
  • Rodent management.
  • Development of animal health covers measures.
  • Development of aquaculture in hills.
  • Molecular genetic studies in IPR perspective.
  • Testing and refinement of evolved technologies at farmers’ field and their dissemination.
  • Use of Information Technology in Agriculture and also market.

 

Vision

 

To design, develop and act as a pool of new knowledge and skills required by the farmers, to improve the socio-economic status of rural people with continuous collective research and extension services to bring a sustainable development and nutritional security at household level.
